World Population NewsPOPLINE, the World Population News Service newsletter quotes UNICEF's 1992 State of the World's Children Report thusly: There would be 1.3 billion fewer people in the world - the current population of China - by the year 2025 if all women were able to determine the size and spacing of their families. The report observes that access to contraception decreases maternal and child mortality and improves the quality of life for women and children. James P Grant, executive director of UNICEF, notes that an awareness of the full range of benefits available from responsible family planning "has been hidden from the public view by clouds of controversy which have long hung over this issue."
