United Nations and UNICEF

October 24 is U.N. Day and October 31 is UNICEF Day. The League has supported the United Nations since its inception and by extension, League members are reminded to join in these celebrations.

Support is needed for U.S. contributions to U.N. programs and peacekeeping. Congress may make deep cuts in the administration's request for U.S. contributions to the U.N. system, thereby jeopardizing U.S. leadership in U.N. security, humanitarian, economic development, environmental and technical assistance programs.

League members can encourage our Congressional members to support the administration's fiscal year 1994 request for peacekeeping. Senator Daniel K. Akaka can be reached at 720 Hart Senate Office Bldg., Washington, D.C., 20510; Senator Daniel K. Inouye is in room 722. Representative Neil Abercrombie's address is 1440 Longworth House Office Bldg., Washington, D.C. 20515; Representative Patsy T. Mink's office is at 2135 Rayburn House Office Bldg.

Calls may be made to their local offices with your words of support. Akaka: 541-2534; Inouye: 541-2542; Abercrombie: 541-2570; and Mink: 541-1986.

Annual appropriations measures that fund U.S. assessed and voluntary contributions to the United Nations system and peacekeeping have come under attack as the result of increasing pressure to reduce the projected budget deficit for FY 1994. Concerns about the pace of management reform within the U.N., fairness of the formula by which countries are expected to contribute to the U.N. system and peacekeeping, the effectiveness of the programs in carrying out their mandates, and the potential for U.S. military involvement in several operations raise issues debated over funding levels. It is important for members of Congress to know that there is a constituency for constructive U.S. leadership in the U.N. Your letter or call will help.
