Voting Rights Act

Congressional floor action on LWV sponsored bill HR3112 is expected as soon as Sept. 15. This bill would extend the Voting Rights Act which expires on August 6, 1982.

There is considerable opposition to extending this Act which has been so instrumental in allowing minorities to vote for the first time in many areas. Opponents argue that it's no longer needed or that it unfairly discriminates against the South.

League members have been monitoring minority voting in several southern states and have reported that contrary to what opponents say, problems still exist.

National is asking us to write or call our Congressmen urging continued support of the extension of the Voting Rights Act. The address and numbers are on the bottom of p. 3, under our other Call To Action.
