A Call to Action: The Federal Clean Air ActThe Clean Air Act will be re-written by the present Congress. The LWV strongly supports the basic principles of the present act. Experts tell us that relaxing clean air standards will bring irreversible harm to our health and environment. The Administration, however, is being pressured by industry to gut the present Clean Air Act because industry does not want to bear the costs. When Rhoda Miller and Marian Wilkins were in Washington this spring, Congressman Heftel, in particular, was emphasizing the cost of clean air to industry. But we must remind our Congressmen that there are also very high costs associated with ill health, damage to fish, trees, vegetation, etc. The cost effects of acid rain to health, property, and environment has escalated to $5 billion per year. And this is only one aspect of the problem. Since Clean air is not an overwhelming problem in Hawaii, our Congressmen may be complacent and under-rate the extent of the problem nationwide. However, if new cars are allowed to exceed present standards of emission control, Honolulu air may well exceed the acceptable limits of carbon monoxide. It is imperative that our Congressmen hear from us NOW in support of clean air in the United States. CALL OR WRITE TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVES: Representative Cec Heftel - House of Representatives - Washington, D.C. 20515 - 546-8997 Representative Daniel Akaka - House of Representatives - Washington, D.C. 20515 - 546-8952 Senator Spark Matsunaga - United States Senate Washington, D.
