Annual Meeting Report

The League of Women Voters of Honolulu met on April 12, 2008, for its Annual Meeting at the Waikiki Yacht Club.

Members accepted a revised set of bylaws and approved a budget for 2008-2009. Treasurer Randy Ching explained that Honolulu League is not doing too well financially and we are dipping into our reserves every quarter.

Since Nominating Committee Chair failed to send in a slate of nominees, nominations were accepted from the floor. Jackie Parnell nominated Piilani Kaopuiki for President; Sue Miller for Vice President; Robin Loomis for Secretary; Charles Carole for Director; Teresa Lau for Director; Pat Otake for Nominating Committee; Roxie Berlin for Nominating Committee. There is still one vacancy on the Nominating Committee. The slate was elected by acclamation.

Membership chair Teresa Lau reported current membership stands at 190.

Affordable Shelter chair Jackie Parnell reported that the Mayor has stated that the City and County of Honolulu has no responsibility to provide affordable housing, because this is the State’s responsibility. He wants to sell the public housing the City has now. The City Charter requires the City to provide one-half of one percent for affordable housing and money is accumulating, but the Mayor doesn’t want to spend it. However, he has hired a coordinator.

I would like to remind members that a call from League to serve should be accepted with pride. Participate, participate, participate.
