Guest Speaker Saved Kawainui MarshDrive. Determination. Dedication. These three words appropriately describes Muriel Seto, guest speaker at Honolulu League’s April meeting. Known as the “Mother of Kawainui Marsh”, Muriel inspired us with her talk “A Brief History of a Successful Volunteer Issue”. In 1971 she learned that Dillingham and Kaneohe Ranch proposed a shopping center larger than Ala Moana on part of the site. She worked for the next 30 plus years to save the marsh. The climax of her diligence is monumental in that in 2005 the marsh was designated the Kawainui/Hamakua Marsh Wetland Complex and Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. This is the largest wetland in the Pacific. Elizabeth Reilly |
