Three New Arrivals

After only six months of pregnancy, the Honolulu League of Women Voters has delivered three lusty Units. If these Units are to grow strong and healthy and if the League is to bear more offspring, they must be taken care of.

The Board, as guardian, must protect thorn by constant interest and careful planning. They must be fed only the clearest facts and the finest resource material by the resource committees.

The membership in general will get the greatest enjoyment and reward from these youngsters if they will give them their support and understanding. There is some confusion as to what a unit really is. Perhaps it would be easier to point out what a unit is not.

A Unit is not an action group.

A Unit is not a resource committee.

A Unit is not en independent group.

There are various kinds of Unit meetings:

  1. Information-giving, e.g., one devoted to distributing and exchanging facts gathered in a Know Your Town Government Survey, or on some other item of League program.

  2. Problem-solving, e.g., one seeking to arrive at a League decision on a proposed state tax with proceeds earmarked for school construction.

  3. Action-developing, e.g., one to talk over the way the members of the League can carry out the plans of the Board for promoting public understanding of the importance of strengthening the U. N.

  4. Program-making, e.g., one to discuss the Board's proposed local agenda for the coming year.

Our first meeting about the jail was of the information-giving type. Our next will be additional information-giving and program-making on National Agenda.
