Marks for the LeagueFewer mail-in absentee ballots will be disqualified for invalid marks in this year's elections because of the efforts of the Hawaii League of Women Voters. In December 1983, the league asked the Lieutenant Governor's office to amend election laws to allow any mark (on the ballot) which clearly reflects the voters' intent to be considered valid. Under past election rules, only a paper ballot marked with an "x" in the box was counted as valid. Following public hearings held during the summer, election rules were amended and absentee voters are now allowed to mark ballot boxes with either a "check",
or "x". Several league members attending training sessions in election counting centers were pleased to hear the Lieutenant Governor's office staff give major credit for this improvement to the League of Women Voters.
