Susie Orient Returns to the Voter following 2-Year VacationTwo years ago the "Susie Orient" column was especially written for new members and featured answers to questions that were often perplexing to new Leaguers. While attending a recent unit meeting, Susie overhead the following conversation: New Member: "My mother wrote and said 'She hoped that I wouldn't get involved with League if they were all Democrats like the Leaguers here in Smallville.'" Old Member: "But didn't you know that the League is non-partisan. That means we never support a party or a candidate, but we may join with particular people in supporting governmental issues. In fact League urges each member to be active in a party as a part of citizen responsibility." New Member: "What if I want to run for office?" . Old Member: "The League says, 'Good Luck' to you, unless you are a board member. No board member can run for office, promote a candidate or hold office in a political party. The League' s non-partisanship has helped make its views acceptable to a wide variety of organizations." New Member: "I'll have to convince my mother her daughter won't be led astray politically by Honolulu League!" Susie Says: We are non-partisan, but definitely political when supporting a League position.
