Education Committee ReportTo date, the Committee has participated less in education bill hearings than in past sessions of the Legislature. This has been due both to the chair's newness to the role and to her incapacitation. The Committee has decided to attempt to appear - or minimally to provide testimony - at remaining hearings on all charter school bills. Emerging from its study of dropout rates in Hawaii's high schools, the Committee has decided to emphasize 'at-risk' youngsters in Hawaii's public schools. Evidently, at least one in five students in Hawaii fails to complete high school - a tragedy for them, as well as a situation that compounds the State's economic problems. Since the public has not previously had opportunity to know the situation, there has been little public discussion of the dropout problem, pressure to address it adequately, or attempts to rally and coordinate community resources in doing so. The Education Committee has decided to focus on these several challenges in coming months. Mary Anne Raywid |
