LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF HAWAII
The League of Women Voters of Hawaii is a council of the local leagues. The presidents of the local leagues – Hawaii
County, Honolulu and Kauai – are automatically members of the State board.
Most of the other board members
are also active members of their local leagues.

2009-2011 STATE BOARD
State Board officers and directors are elected to a two-year term at the biennial Convention. In addition to the four officers and four elected directors, the full Board will be comprised of up to four appointed directors plus the president or designee of each local League.

Based on information in the League's Honolulu and State newsletter archives, we have been able to construct a list of (almost) all the officers who have filled those 750 positions over the years! These lists and their associated indexes, acknowledge our appreciation of the dedicated service of these members who have put in extra effort in support of our League. Mahalo to them all! |

LEAGUE OF WOMEN
VOTERS OF HONOLULU
The League of Women Voters of Honolulu was founded in 1948 by Marion
and Allan Saunders who knew that democracy thrives when citizens play
an active role in elections and government oversight. In the more than
50 years since it was established, members of the Honolulu League have
been actively involved in “making democracy work” on Oahu working
on such issues as education, planning and zoning, transportation, environmental
quality, campaign finance reform, prevention of domestic violence. The
Honolulu League has also provided voter services to the community by registering
voters, assisting in vote counts, arranging and moderating campaign debates
and forums, holding meetings and conferences on various public issues
of the day and serving on State and City and County commissions and advisory
committees.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN
VOTERS OF HAWAII ISLAND
The Hawaii Island League of Women Voters has been a part of
the Big Island community since the 1960's. Members of the Hawaii Island
League work on local, state and national issues that they are passionate
about, things like; Voter Education, Natural Resource Preservation and
Access, Campaign Finance Reform and Community Planning.

The League of Women Voters of Kauai was founded in 1969 by Winona Sears and Althea McCleery. Since that time its members have maintained an active presence on the island.

MAUI MEMBERS-AT-LARGE
UNIT
League members living on Maui are in the process of establishing a Member-at-Large
Unit which will become a full-fledged League of Women Voters when the
unit has a sufficient number of members and other criteria are met. Meanwhile
they are enthusiastically getting involved in voter registration and other

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS- U.S.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, has
fought since 1920 to improve our systems of government and impact public
policies through citizen education and advocacy. The League's enduring
vitality and resonance comes from its unique decentralized structure.
The League is a grassroots organization, working at the national, state
and local levels.
There are Leagues in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong, in addition to the hundreds of
local Leagues nationwide. The League of Women Voters of the United
States and the League of Women Voters Education Fund operate at the
national level with grassroots support from state and local Leagues.
The League of Women Voters is strictly nonpartisan; it neither
supports nor opposes candidates for office at any level of government.
At the same time, the League is wholeheartedly political and works to
influence policy through advocacy. It is the original grassroots citizen
network, directed by the consensus of its members nationwide. The 900
state and local Leagues – comprising a vast grassroots lobby corps that
can be mobilized when necessary.
Over time, the League's legislative priorities change to reflect the
needs of society and critical issues of concern. The organization
remains true to its basic purpose: to make democracy work for all
citizens. The League of Women Voters makes a difference in the lives of
citizens because of the energy and passion of thousands of members
committed to our principles.
