The League of Women Voters of Hawaii supports the intent of bill 2417. We have not had time to really analyze all the provisions, but this seems to be in line with the publicized intent of the Internal Revenue Service to audit widely returns which include tax shelters and other means of legally and illegally minimizing tax obligations.

We are encouraged by the newspaper accounts that attribute approximately half of the state’s budget surplus to aggressive pursuit of delinquent taxes.

It is only when our residents are convinced that all other residents are paying their fair share of taxes that they willingly and honestly pay their own fair share. Respect for the system of taxation is critical to the financial health of our state.

Thank you for the opportunity to testify on this bill.
