LWV Opens a DoorState League was invited to submit the name of a well-qualified candidate to attend a training session on the United Nations, and we nominated BARBARA FARWELL. The invitation was sent to all 50 leagues with the understanding that only 25 people would be selected. Barbara was chosen to participate. On March 15-17 she will he attending a training session at the UN in New York. At this session she will gain firsthand knowledge of the United Nations and the U.S. Mission to the UN as well as learn new ways of communicating with local communities. She will attend a reception given for the League by the U.S. Mission to meet the new U.S. Ambassador, Andrew Young. When she returns to Hawaii, she will run a community attitude sampling aided by our local leagues. If the funds are available she will return to Washington, D.C. in the summer to relate her findings to policymakers in both the legislative and executive branches of government, and to help develop ideas for follow-up activities in the local communities surveyed. Through her involvement in League, Barbara has found an opportunity to expand her participation in our governmental process. CONGRATULATIONS, BARBARA: MORE OPPORTUNITIES KNOCK -- GET INVOLVED IN THE LEAGUE AND LET LWV OPEN A DOOR FOR YOU! To enable LWV to open more doors for more members, local and state officers met recently to discuss the material on membership brought back from a National League workshop in Tempe, Arizona by Pat Shutt and Jerry Hess. From this meeting came a firm commitment to keep members in closer contact with League operations and opportunities.
