League of Women Voters of Hawaii - Council 2002

Saturday, May 18, 2002
8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

The annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of Hawaii will take place at One Kalakaua, 1314 Kalakaua Avenue. This year the meeting is Council rather than Convention, the two being held in alternate years. The Business meeting, which begins at 8:30, will be held in the Card Room, downstairs.

A delicious buffet luncheon and an interesting program will take place in the Auditorium on the first floor. Lunch offers a salad, fresh fruit, a pasta dish, salmon, rice, vegetables & prime rib, dessert and drinks. Parking is across the street in the lot on the corner of Young, Kalakaua, and King. (Enter on Young.)

Both morning and afternoon programs promise some excitement. The afternoon program, starting at 1:00, will consist of a panel of as many gubernatorial candidates as are willing to show their hands this early. So far, John Carroll (Republican) and Ed Case (Democrat) have agreed to be there, and Linda Colburn has agreed to moderate. She will pose questions to each candidate on issues of concern to League: campaign finance reform, the economy, education, the environment, and gambling. Opportunity for the audience to raise questions will follow. The morning program following the Business session and beginning at 9:45 may also hold high interest and yield some much needed solutions. It will consist of discussion of what may be Hawaii's most pressing civic issues:

  • How do we get rid of the corruption in government?
  • How can we force change in the Legislature's tyrannical and inefficient procedural rules?
  • How do we persuade people that voting is worthwhile?
  • How do we force the government and all its offices to operate openly?
  • What is propelling the high cost of government?

Please let us know as soon as possible that you plan to come, by completing and mailing the form located on the back of this newsletter.
