Education Bill Analyzed

The Education Committee had a good meeting with Representative David Stegmaier, chair of the House Committee on Education. Discussion centered on the recently passed state Comprehensive Education Bill and what it did or did not do for Hawaii's schools.

League is concerned about how far short this bill falls from giving the autonomy needed by individual schools. Rep. Stegmaier expressed concern about discipline in the classroom, which sets the climate for learning.

The committee's February meeting will be with Board of Education member John Compton, on Wed., Feb. 15 at 4:00 pm at 3596 Woodlawn Drive. Everyone is welcome. Please call 988-2635 to confirm your attendance.

Marion Saunders
Chair, Education Committee
