Our Bill ContinuedAs the Bulletin went to press last month our Medico-Legal Investigative Department bill, drafted by the Coroner's Office Committee of the League, was still in Committee. HB 646 was in the House Judiciary and SB 541 was in the Senate Judiciary. On April the 18th, the day after our Annual Meeting, both bills came up for Committee hearing - the Senate bill at 8:30 a.m. and the House bill at 2:00 p.m. This meant fast foot work for the Leaguers who were prepared to present the testimony on the bills. The Senate Judiciary Committee members said the Charter Commission would take care of the Medico-Legal Investigative Department. We assured them that we had approached the Charter Commission and were told it had no objection to our working for a change in the Coroner's Office. However, all bills having to do with this subject were filed by the Senate Judiciary. HB 646 finally made the floor of the House for Third Reading. The vote was going along fine with thirteen ayes when the ayes suddenly changed to nays. The final vote was 8 ayes - 21 nays - 1 excused. Representative Hebden Porteus moved for reconsideration, with a second by Representative George R. Ariyoshi, who moved that it be sent back to Judiciary for amendment. As of today, May 2nd, the bill is still in Judiciary without sufficient votes to bring it out. Be sure to come to the membership meeting May 15tht when a complete report will be given.
