Time for Action on the Trade Agreements Act

As you know, the League has long studied International Trade and supported the principle of freer trade, and since 1936 has supported the Trade Agreements Act. The current act expires in June and H.R. 1, the bill to renew the Trade Agreements Act, is now being considered by the House ,lays and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee. This bill is consistent with the standards of the League's position and the League will support it, though it would prefer that the Trade Act be renewed for a longer time than three years and that the "escape clause" and peril point sections of the present act be repealed.

Last year the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act was renewed for one year only. Foreign businessmen need the assurance of a long-range agreement on foreign trade by the U.S. in order to feel that trade with this country is a secure risk.

Now is the time for action: Too often the public waits until legislation is on the floor of one or both Houses before it speaks. By then many Congressmen have already made up their minds. By then lobbyists have been at work for months making their special pleas. Help your League by an effective factor in promoting a forward-looking trade policy by writing to the Chairmen of the Senate and House Committees:

  1. The Honorable Harry F. Bird
Chairman, Senate Finance Committee The United States Senate
    Washington, D.C.

  2. Representative Jere Cooper
Chairman, House Ways and Means Committee House of Representatives
    Washington, D.C.
