New Member Speaks Out

Sunday, December 8, 2001, I attended my first planning meeting of the League of Women Voters of Honolulu at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki. The ladies present were very gracious and welcomed me and making me immediately comfortable to be there with them.

President Johnson presented her agenda and discussion groups were formed to discuss particular issues important to the League. I joined transportation and planning & zoning. Having two separate topics, our group could have used more time because we had definite opinions and questions. Reports from each group were then presented to the gathering. I remember wondering whether a larger attendance would have produced more and divergent ideas. If we had more time for discussion before and after the reports could we have stimulated more comments?

I joined the League, in part, because I had heard of the reputation the League has for making a difference in our community. At the meeting I wondered whether there was enough energy there to do that. Being a new member, I did not know what to expect but I was surprised at the low attendance, based on membership count. I will continue to listen and hope to learn more of the activities of the League. I am looking forward to meeting and hearing from more of our members in the future. Wouldn't it be stimulating to hear ideas flow from a larger gathering of interested members.
