Scorecard on Gambling PositionsDot Bobilin, League Board member and chairperson of the Hawaii Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, has compiled a list of State senators and representatives and their positions on legalizing gambling in Hawaii. This will be used for lobbying purposes at the legislature in the 1999 session. She and some of the coalition members surveyed all 1998 candidates for public office in the primary and general elections. The information from even those who were not elected to office will be useful since most of them are active in their communities and may be willing to join in our efforts to educate the public. At a recent meeting of the coalition, concern was voiced that the legislature might resort to an advisory referendum of voters. The check-off list on her survey included these statements:
Bobilin notes that of the 76 legislatures, 42 have indicated by way of the survey and/or past action on this issue, opposition to legalized gambling in Hawai'i.
