National ConventionThe national convention of the League of Women Voters is scheduled for June 13 through June 16, 1998 at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. LWV Hawaii is entitled to 3 delegates, Honolulu League to 3, and Kauai and Hawaii County Leagues to I each. Any League member may attend the convention as a non-voting member. Anyone interested in attending the convention as a delegate may apply to the respective Leagues. Be advised, though, that State League delegates will most probably be responsible for all of their own travel and hotel expenses. Besides approving the National League budget, electing Officers and Board members and considering Bylaw amendments, the convention will be adopting the National League program for the next biennium. We are already receiving requests from other Leagues throughout the country to support different studies and issues for emphasis. The latest was support for a study of the Presidential Primary - a system we can agree is in need of reform. Other perennial issues are population control, immigration policies, sustainable development and a review of U.S. policies in regard to the United Nations. In the next few months, we will need to give these and other issues serious consideration so that we can participate fully in the adoption of our national program. |
