The combined Hilo and Kona units met in December in Waimea and discussed the Gambling Study and voted to ask the state board to publicize the upcoming Pro-Con paper. Also on the agenda were discussions regarding violence against women, the Beijing Fourth World Conference on Women, and how best to support the United Nations.

Also discussed was the subject of the upcoming vote on whether to convene a constitutional convention. Many members expressed a sentiment that it might be just a waste of time and money since too many of the delegates have aspirations to become legislators and don't want to change much.

Since then the Hilo Unit has been meeting every two weeks in coordination with the AAUW and the public to explore ways to increase voter participation and particularly voter education. Also in the planning is a telephone survey to determine what people think are the real issues.
