Convention '95

League of Women Voters of Hawai'i Convention


Saturday, May 20, 9 A.M. to 3 P.M.

At the league convention held every two years, delegates vote on program and budget as submitted by the state board. Nominations are presented for the board and officers (this year, for the 1995-1997 term), and elections are held. Convention delegates are the presidents of the local leagues, delegates chosen by each local league (one delegate for every 15 voting members as of January 1, 1995), and the state board.

All members are welcome to attend and to take part in the meeting. Details will be forthcoming in the next issue of Leo Hana.

The program is adopted by the following process:

  • Three months prior to convention, local league boards may make suggestions for the state program.

  • Two months prior, the state board shall consider recommendations and formulate a proposed recommended program and submit it to local league boards.

  • Any suggestions submitted to the state board three months prior and not recommended by the board may be adopted by the convention provided that (1) the convention shall order consideration by a majority vote, and (2) the vote on the proposed change shall not be taken at the same session as the order for consideration, and (3) the convention adopts the change by a three-fifths vote.

  • A majority vote of those present and voting shall be required for adoption of subjects in the proposed program as presented to the convention by the state board.

Nominations are officially presented to the membership through this process:

  • The report of the Nominating Committee of its nominations for officers, directors, and the chair and two members of the succeeding Nominating Committee shall be sent to the local Leagues two months before convention.

  • At the first session of the convention, nominations may be made from the floor by any member of the convention provided the consent of the nominee shall have been secured.

This year's committee-elected members Jacqueline (Vogt) Kido, Dr. Elizabeth Adams, and Jean Aoki, and board representatives Evelyn Bender and Cira deCastillo -- has completed its work early and submits the following names for two year terms to the board and for elected positions on the Nominating Committee:
