Natural Resources at the LegislatureOne of our priorities in the natural resources field this year is implementation of the Hawai'i Water Code, which was passed by the 1987 Legislature. We have joined other community groups and interested individuals in the Fourth People's Water Conference and the Environmental Legislature Network to work on this and a number of other issues. These issues include a "bottle" bill, minimum instream flow standards, funds to expedite the state's capability to monitor and test the water quality, and bills to increase the coordination of the planning process. The water code does not include "coastal waters" in the definition of Hawai'i's waters, but the League would support a bill to include this coverage if it were introduced. Kiyoko Nitz |
