CZM UpdateAll Hawaii League members will recall the Coastal Zone Poster Contest of November 1977. It was a lot of work, but well worth the effort, as it heightened public awareness of CZM issues and gave the added spinoff of excellent publicity for the League. You can imagine how pleased we were when the federal CZM agency asked to use our poster contest grand prize winner (a batik by Shelley Kuroda of Farrington High School) as an official CZM poster. We were very happy to comply with the request, with the proviso that the League of Women Voters of Hawaii be given credit. The long awaited poster has arrived in the office and it is a lovely, full color reproduction. Noticeably absent from the poster is any mention of the League. To
add insult to injury, the Department of Planning and Economic Development memo accompanying the poster refers to the enclosed poster as "an important part of our efforts
to increase public awareness our CZM program" (emphasis added). A letter of protest has been sent to the federal CZM agency and a telephone call to the DPED protesting the memo wording has also been made on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Hawaii.
