Public Funding... Yes!! The 1973 Income Tax returns processed through May 31 showed 14.9% of the taxpayers used the check-off as compared with 3.1% for the previous year. The special fund for the 1976 presidential election was brought to nearly $25 million. Increased participation is ascribed to heightened public interest in campaign reform and the placing of the check-off on the front page of the U.S. tax returns.
