LWV and KITV Present Election Debate

League will partner with KITV 4 (cable 6) to present a prime-time debate featuring the three leading candidates for the First Congressional District seat. Appearing at the May 7 debate will be Ed Case, Charles Djou and Colleen Hanabusa.

The rules for inclusion in the debate, mutually agreed to by League and KITV are:

  1. Receives significant levels of public support in independent public opinion polls
  2. Has received substantial campaign contributions from varied sources.
  3. Has received a substantial level of votes in prior elections for the same or comparable office(s).
  4. Has previously held significant public office(s).
  5. Has received significant news coverage from a wide range of media outlets.

A candidate meeting any one of these qualifications will be included. In February, Genie Garner, news director of KITV, approached League with the idea of partnering with us to present prime-time debates for at least 2 elections: for First District Representative to Congress and for governor. Honolulu president Piilani Kaopuiki and state president Pearl Johnson met with KITV staff and came to an agreement on the extent of League participation and control.
