President's MessageThe League statewide is busy on all fronts, including legislative issues, island wide issues and national issues. The legislative committee members have done phenomenal work keeping track of bills moving through the legislature. A great deal of effort has gone into Campaign Finance Reform and it has been an uphill battle. I encourage all LWV members and friends to call their legislators in the Senate, to pass HB 1879 now SB 2666. It is narrowly focused and allows a pilot project for election financing for the City Council on Oahu only. We are also firmly supporting open voting in Conference Committees because it is the right thing to do. This is a policy decision whose time has come and is, in fact, long past due. Open voting during Legislative Hearings started in the House of Representatives years ago and was later adopted by the Senate. But open voting has never been implemented during Conference Committee Hearings. Under the Sunshine Law, I believe open voting is mandated. Again, it is time to take action! Call or FAX your Representatives and Senators and let your voice be heard. Our Annual Council Meeting will be held in Kona on Saturday, May 20. Our National LWV Liaison, Kay Maxwell, will be coming to Hawaii May 15 and plans to visit all the units from Kauai to the Big Island. She will be our main presenter at the Council Meeting, bringing to us the very latest information from National as well as taking back with her our bundle of news and suggestions. Since Hawaii is the only state with a Legislative Public Access facility, we will be spending time informing Kay on how Hawaii's Public Access started and how important it is to good government. You all are cordially invited to meet with Kay both at your local unit meeting and as a participant at the Annual Council meeting. A complete itinerary on local meetings and the details of the Council meeting will be sent to you within the next two weeks. Please feel free to join us. Mahalo a nui loa for all the dedicated work which keeps the League of Women Voters of Hawaii held in high esteem. You are awesome!!! Aloha,
