President's Message

The year 2005 has been a busy one for the League. We have focused on the environment, on Clean Elections (Voter-Owned Elections), and on the Sunshine Laws, and we will continue to do so. To add to our activities, since there is an election coming up, we will co-sponsor the Candidates' Debate with the AAUW. So everyone: enjoy your holidays, relax, and get ready for lots of action in 2006.

Our first meeting of the new year will be on January 14 at 11 a.m. at Tex Drive In, Honokaa. Our speaker is Carolyn Stewart of Marine & Coastal Solutions International. Her presentation will be "on watershed management with a focus on polluted runoff control and innovative stormwater management techniques."

Carolyn Stewart has 16 years of experience as a coastal and marine resources planner working for international agencies, foreign and U.S. governments, Hawaii State govern-ment, and non-governmental organizations. She is a former senior planner with the Hawaii Coastal Zone Management Program and founder of the non-profit Malama Kai Foundation. She received a Master of Marine Affairs degree from the University of Washington School of Marine Affairs and a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Carolyn is Vice-President of Marine and Coastal Solutions International, Inc., a Hawaii-based environmental resources management planning firm. She is currently the coordinator for the Waiulaula Watershed Management Project. Since protection and control of water resources is an important matter to all of us, I'm sure her presentation will be of great interest to all members.
