Drug CourtThe new Big Island Drug Court in West Hawai’i opened on August 22, 2005, at 81-940 Haleki’i Street in Kealakekua, Hawaii. Danny Akaka performed the blessing in the presence of Chief Justice Ronald Moon and all the circuit judges on the island. Also present were community members, who helped make this courtroom possible; elected officials, who support the court; and members of the general public. The courtroom is paneled in koa and compact, while comfortable. It will be well used during the coming months. Out of the 23 graduates of the Big Island Drug Court from 2002 to 2004, none have been re-arrested, which is an amazing success rate. Chief Judge Ronald Ibarra will continue to preside over this Court and the Big Island Drug Court in Hilo. He travels between them and other programs starting on other parts of Hawai’i Island. The League of Women Voters has been supportive of this program from the beginning and will continue their support through the Friends of the Drug Court in East Hawai’i (Barry Taniguchi, Chair) and in West Hawai’i (Margaret Matsunaga, Chair.)
