Viewpoint - Convention CenterFEBRUARY 1, 1993 Among the 6 locations for a Convention Center mentioned by the State Convention Center Authority, we think that the Ewa end of the Ala Wai Golf course merits serious consideration. Since the land is publicly owned, it immediately eliminates costly acquisition expenses inherent at both the Aloha Motors site and the Hobron block -- both recently inflated in value by the City Council's actions. The large land area allows for a single-level design with comparatively low construction as well as operating costs, and an option to build as large a Center as deemed necessary. Concealing the building beneath a small portion of the Ala Wai Golf Course, with the golf course built over the Center, the exhibition area can be easily accessible to conferees and delivery vehicles. Temporary tees and greens will allow continuous golf course play during construction. Upon completion the golf course will be upgraded to a more challenging course with the back nine elevated over the Center. Most important, this site takes convention traffic out of Waikiki by a potential primary access utilizing the existing right-of-way for the Manoa-Palolo Drainage Canal and need not impact adjacent neighborhoods. Elevated pedestrian bridges over the canal and a canal promenade can be a catalyst for Ala Wai cleanup and provide an Ala Wai-Kalakaua linkage. The potential "peripheral parking" site will keep traffic out of Waikiki. If we have to have a Convention Center, why not one that does it all and costs the least?
