Ala Wai Convention Center

Speaking for Vision of Hawaii 2020, Queen Emma Foundations president, Tim Yee gave League's Planning and Zoning Committee a preview at its monthly meeting, January 25, of its plans for a Community and Convention Center to be located partially underneath the Ewa end of the Ala Wai Golf Course.

Originally conceived over two years ago, the plan now has a number of unique features:

  1. It utilizes the ground under a small portion of the Golf Course but would have a broad view of the Ala Wai Canal.

  2. The golf course would continue on top of the low-rise building housing meeting and exhibition halls.

  3. The Center would thus use publicly available land and, with low single-level construction costs, would be economical 'to build and operate.

  4. Access to the Center and peripheral parking facilities would be outside Waikiki proper and would keep trucks and other vehicles out of residential areas.

  5. The plan includes outdoor promenades, fountains, cafes and extensive open space and landscaping.

  6. It is located within a 5-to-8 minute walk from the center of Waikiki and major hotels.
