On Thursday, June 25th at 7 p.m. there will be a public hearing at the Washington Intermediate School cafeteria on applying to the federal government for $618,000,000 to help fund Honolulu's proposed rail transit project.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if some of the 71 percent of us recently polled as opposing the project actually showed up to testify against this application? Can you imagine the effect on the federal government if just one city said, "We don't want your money! Why don't you use it to reduce the deficit!"

Recently, 4 of 9 city council members --Desoto, Felix, Holmes and Morgado wrote a letter urging the U.S. House of Representatives to delete this project from the 1993 federal budget. They cited overwhelming public opposition, the lack as yet of city council approval, and the city's inadequate financial plan as the reasons for their position.

Those who agree with them should say so at the June 25th hearing!

Campaigning for the 1992 elections has scarcely begun in Hawaii. However, we are already seeing misleading ads and hearing charges of racism, cronyism, and alleged wrongdoings.

Are we citizens going to condone this type of campaigning? Or are we going to insist that our candidates debate the issues and conduct fair and open campaigns.

You can do your part. Urge the candidates you support to pledge to conduct fair and clean campaigns and to focus on the issues. Examine political ads carefully and call attention to any misleading facts or distortions. Encourage the media to concentrate on the issues and to debunk any false or misleading charges that appear in political commercials. Above all, we must encourage all those eligible to register, and then to vote, in both the primary and general elections. We must not allow the electorate to become discouraged and disillusioned to the point that they will not vote. This will only allow the special interest groups and big contributors to gain control. We must take back the system. We must insist upon campaigns which focus on the solutions to the problems and concerns facing all of us today.

Remember we will get bad politicians and poor programs if good people do not participate in the political campaigns and do not vote. Your vote does make a difference.
