Letter from the Editor - Star Bulletin - 9/18/91Honolulu Star-Bulletin October 18, 1991 Mayor Frank Fasi Dear friends: We're in receipt of letters from each of you accusing us of complicity with the other in regard to the letter of Julie Tavares McKay, published on Oct. 14 alongside that of Arlene Kim Ellis, both on the subject of the League of Women Voters and rapid transit. For the record, both Ms. McKay's and Ms. Ellis' letters are dated Sept. 23, 1991. What's amusing about the two letters of complaint we've received from you is that (1) Ms. Ellis charged us with delaying her letter and unfairly publishing it alongside one that was more current, and (2) Mayor Fasi suggested that we delayed Ms. Tavares letter long enough to let Ms. Ellis read it and write a rebuttal. Both allegations are untrue. We wish we could have published both Sept. 23 letters, concurrently, earlier to have allayed these feelings of suspicion. The Star-Bulletin receives nearly 100 letters a week now and publishes about half of them over the course of a year. These two simply got caught in the heavy traffic of mail on a variety of timely topics. But both the mayor and Ms. Ellis are wrong in their suggested conspiracy theories. We would show each of you the other' s letters, but that would be against our policy. We do not show letters written by one person to another prior to publication, but there is nothing to prevent the two of you from comparing notes. If there are any questions about this, please call me at 525-8607. The Star-Bulletin thanks both of you for your interest and hopes to continue receiving more of your letters, which we'll try to publish earlier next time. Sincerely, John E. Simonds
