Permit Modification for Storage on Johnston Atoll

The US Army received a permit to operate Johnston Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal System (JACADS) in Aug. 1985. The modification will allow continued storage of hazardous waste as part of the existing permit.

Following is a list of the hazardous wastes that are or may be stored:

Obsolete munitions - M55 rockets
Unusable, over-packed chemical munitions
Spent decontamination solution
Miscellaneous spill cleanup wastes
Spent carbon filters from the vents on the container storage igloos
Agent wastes encased in concrete or in sand in 55-gallon drums
Laboratory wastes from activities at the Johnston Island Laboratory
Maintenance wastes such as paint wastes and solvents
Discarded agent detection materials

EPA, in compliance with deadlines mandated by the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments, has required the US Army to apply for a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permit to continue storing hazardous waste at Johnston Island.

Public participation is an integral part of the RCRA permitting process.

A public information meeting will be held at the Washington Intermediate School, 1622 So. King St. on July 9, 1991, from 7-9pm. The modification request can be viewed and copied thru 8/02/91 at:
