City Council Review Committee Meetings Scheduled with Political Science Professors

All League members are invited to a meeting of the City Council Review Committee on August 16 at 1:30 P.M. at the League office when Professor Ira Rohter of the UH/ Manoa Political Science Department will share his views on how the City Council could be overhauled to make it a more democratic body and process. Our brief talk over the telephone indicated that he shares our concern over the direction we're taking where land development is concerned, and his enthusiasm and excitement were such that we felt we needed to share him with all of you.

On the 9th of August, committee members will be meeting with Professor Phyllis Turnbull who is also with the Political Science Department of the UH/Manoa, to seek her guidance in charting the direction of our study.

SUBCOMMITTEES WILL STUDY ISSUES.

The committee is in the process of organizing the subcommittees which will gather and organize data, ideas and opinions on the various issues. These are: 1) Terms-length, limited versus unlimited (including the mayor's), 2) Part time versus full time positions, 3) Council size and the electoral system at large, by districts, or a combination of both, 4) Filling of vacancies, 5) Public access, and 6) Partisan or Nonpartisan. Ethics and campaign reform will be studied later by the whole committee.

League members who are interested in working with any of these subcommittees are urged to call Jean Aoki at 949-7448.
