Aloha Motors C.C. DecisionBy a 5/4 vote, the City Council passed the Resolution to approve the Aloha Motors Convention Center Complex on April 25, although dozens of people testified against it. League opposed the height, density, parking and other exemptions from .zoning-regulations. League testified, as we had exactly a year ago, that "approving this proposal in its present form would make a mockery of comprehensive planning and the zoning supposed to implement it." President asked, "What reason can you give to prove that the safety, health and welfare of the people -the foundation of the police power on which zoning rests -- would not be jeopardized by 500 ft. heights on the Aloha Motors site but would be endangered if the same height increase were allowed... elsewhere?" We pointed out that the proposal did not even comply with the very PRU provisions of the LUO which are its alleged legal basis. We believed that it should have been processed as part of an annual DP amendment review. We closed with "Honolulu can have a convention center, but it should not be one whose legality is questionable and whose price to the community is exorbitant."
