"The LWV Presents"

"Mandatory Sentencing" is the topic of spirited debate at this month's Channel 20 TV presentation. The guests on this program are: Addison Bowman, an attorney and faculty member at the UH Richardson School of Law; Michael Levine, Federal Public Defender; and Gary Modafferi, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney specializing in narcotics cases.. Karen Ahn is the panel moderator.

The panelists address the issue of whether sentencing is a deterrent to crime, and focus on the stages in the chain of judicial process. They raise the point that mandatory sentencing takes decision-making authority away from judges and places it in the hands of prosecutors and probation officers.

This lively and provocative program will. air throughout the month of September, Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. on Oceanic Channel 20.

Executive Producer Katie Loew reports that plans are underway for future programs dealing with such issues as Tort Reform and Planning & Zoning.

"THE LWV PRESENTS" is an ongoing program produced and directed entirely by Leaguers. Volunteers are needed to fill crew positions such as camera, lighting, and sound technician. (Training and certification are provided FREE by Oceanic Cablevision.) If you are interested in participating in production of "THE LWV PRESENTS", phone Katie Loew at 737-7297.
