General Meeting on TransportationLeague members and neighborhood board representatives got an early peek at the Department of Transportation Services rapid transit proposals at the general membership meeting February 26th. DTS Director, John Hirten, made a slide presentation of past and proposed transit facilities. He was joined by assistants in responding to questions posed, first from Planning and Zoning Committee representative, Welcome Fawcett, and Transportation Committee's Dee Lum and finally the audience joined in. DTS proposals have recently been featured in the press and informational meetings have been held throughout the community. A good understanding of the route, hardware and financing will be important to gain community understanding and support of a project of this size. Some facts gleaned: Since the 1967 Oahu Transportation Study (OTS), the number of cars has increased dramatically beyond the number projected; anticipated rail ridership will be 160,000 passengers per day (TheBus currently carries 250,000 passengers per day and will still be an integral part of Oahu's transportation picture); three types of financing / construction methods will be considered -- slice, turnkey and franchise; a Kaimuki to Pearl City route is anticipated as a first stage, with spurs to other areas as the need is evident; this will permit the tying together of activity centers. Many other facets of the rail line and other transportation areas were covered. Join the League's committee and learn."
