![]() President's CornerAlthough she is away, Arlene's thoughts are on League and here are some comments she wrote after reading a San Francisco Chronicle editorial on the political campaign. THE POLITICAL CONSULTANTS who now control most candidates the way Edgar Preen controlled Mortimer Snerd say they are using negative campaigning because it works. One told Chronicle Political Correspondent Larry Liebert, "Voters decry negative commercials, but they seem to buy them much quicker than they do positive ones."
So what can he done? Voters can turn their backs on the worst verbal polluters by choosing candidates who take the higher road. They can demand that future candidates discuss the issues. They can begin to consider a different relationship between campaigns And television. They can demand effective campaign financing reform, particularly limits on campaign spending and limits on the role of political action committees.
