U.H. Congressional Candidate DebateThe sparks flew, figuratively speaking, during the LWV assisted Congressional Candidates debate at the University of Hawaii on September 8, 1986. Literally broiling in the sun, the five candidates, Neil Abercrombie, Mufi Hanneman, Pat Saiki, Blase Harris and Steve Cobb, fielded questions from the UH student body, ranging from their positions on abortion (all were "pro choice") to aid to the Contras (all democrats opposed, one Republican favored, Libertarian less clear). The students were by and large very thoughtful, and with few exceptions were willing to stick to the issues, and the student organizers did a splendid job, obviously being grateful for the LWV guidance and participation. This is a great new-member-future-member opportunity, press coverage was good, although it focused only on the most sensational exchange of the hour. The moderator next time probably should be provided with a gavel or whistle. Monitored by |
