![]() Running to WinWhat does it take to become a candidate? State Senator Chester G. Atkins wrote in 1973 that there are three basic types of candidates: "the single-issue candidate; the symbolic candidate; and the candidate who plans to be permanently or at least indefinitely involved in politics." Will his book, Getting Elected, be useful for today's candidate? We hope that the fall seminar the voter service project committee is planning will provide the answer to that and other questions that Jane Q. Citizen wants to ask. The rationale for presenting such a seminar are: 1.) the need to encourage more and better qualified people to run for office, 2.) the need to validate Hawaii's election process (There are too many uncontested races) 3.) the heightened interest in the elections process. You are welcomed to join the eager committee members as they divide the tasks preparatory to making "Running to Win" an accomplishment for which League members will be proud. Call Jerry Hess and offer your aid as a member of the public relations, arrangements or program sub-committees.
