Election Law StudyDid you know that the proponents of an initiative measure on Kauai paid for the special election on the issue? Did you know that our state constitution provides for a Presidential Primary, but the legislature has never passed a bill to provide the enabling legislation? Did you know that after you sign a petition, opponents may obtain access to the petitions and pressure you to remove your name? These are just some of the interesting facts that helped us decide that a study of our election laws would be a timely subject. Local Leagues will have the opportunity to see how their counties handle election procedures and determine whether state laws deal with all aspects adequately. They will need to look especially at the handling of special elections and the procedures used for initiative, referendum and recall. We may also be examining absentee balloting procedures, problems of voting for overseas residents, purging of registration lists, ballot procedures, etc. Marian Wilkins |
