Public Hearing - HECO's Kahe Power Plant Proposal

In response to requests from the League and other community groups, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has scheduled a public hearing on Hawaiian Electric Company's proposal to burn higher sulfur fuel at their Kahe Power Plant, The hearing is scheduled for February 11, 9:30 a.m. at the State Capitol auditorium and will be continued at 7:30 p.m. at Waipahu High School Cafetorium.

The League opposes the Delayed Compliance Order (DCO) which would allow HECO to again use fuel that emits sulfur dioxide at a level which exceeds national clean air standards. By combining the building of taller stacks and burning lower sulfur fuel, HECO is at the present time meeting the clean air standards.

HECO's proposal to return to burning higher sulfur fuel is estimated to save lc per kilowatt hour on our electric bill. This is a small amount to pay to help HECO keep our air clean.

Attendance at either or both hearings is encouraged. If you wish to give individual testimony, information can be obtained by calling the American Lung Assoc., 537-5966, or the EPA office in the Federal Building.
