The Akamai Voter4-SESSION MINI-COURSE DESIGNED TO HELP THE CITIZEN BECOME
WORKSHOP FORMAT STRESSING ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF ALL PARTICIPANTS
The Akamai VoterIn 1974, Rhoda Miller, funded by the League's Voter Education Fund, initiated an experimental voter education course for Hawaii's high schools. The pilot course, given at Kaiser High School, was very well received and is now on its way toward becoming part of the DOE's offered curriculum. Teachers throughout the state tested a prototype course this year and the refined product will then be produced for wider use. Towards that end, the 1976 Legislature appropriated $50,000 for a voter education course for Hawaii's high schools. At the time of the public hearings for this appropriation, several legislators noted that adults could well use the information contained in the course. Other civic groups that the League spoke with agreed, several leaguers tossed ideas around, and THE AKAMAI VOTER was conceived. This mini-course, cosponsored by the YWCA, is designed to give information, create awareness, and encourage critical thinking. Short films and small group discussions with knowledgeable resource people from the community will highlight the first two sessions. At the 3rd meeting, we'll listen to and question mock candidates and then have a chance to analyze our own motives -- why and how do we pick a candidate? To some this evaluation may be a revelation. The last session will be a lobbying game where everyone plays. No observers allowed. The Palama Settlement has conducted this well-structured game a number of times with great success. Role playing in a highly pressured situation will give a new experience to some and a new perspective about government to all. Rhoda and Helen Griffin's Voter Service. committee, who have been laying the groundwork for the September course, are confident that THE AKAMAI VOTER will prove not only enlightening but enjoyable for instructors and participants alike. To make the course effective, it will be necessary to limit the enrollment to 60. Those interested in early registration may call the Y's Education Department, 538-7061.. where do you fit in?
A training workshop for THE AKAMAI VOTER mini-course will be held in August. We'll discuss the details of the course and experienced leaguers will guide us through a mock discussion. If you can't make the workshop and wish to participate, provisions can be made. Call Rhoda Diller or Helen Griffin. MONDAY, AUGUST 23rd, 9:00 AT THE LEAGUE OFFICE (President Carol Whitesell has been on vacation the month of July)
