International Relations - Annual ReportWith a plethora of study areas to cover, the emphasis of this study committee has been on foreign trade. Our March '73 consensus units covered areas of adjustment assistance to injured workers, firms or communities due to foreign imports; regulation of multinational corporations; U.S. goods competing overseas; regulating foreign imports for purposes of consumer and environmental protection. Our research came from LWV publications, personal interviews of local businessmen, labor, press, and government representatives all concerned with present trade legislation before Congress, mailings from Japan-U.S. Trade Council, Overseas Development Council; World Bank-I.M.F.; press and periodicals. Activities with United Nations involved Melvia Kawashima chairing U.S. Day Events for the City and County of Honolulu last October. Relations with people's Republic of China continues as landmark diplomacy for the United States. Foreign aid is playing teeter-totter with cuts in domestic spending. We are due for aid legislation this year and there should be a major "Report from the Hill" to look for. Melvia Kawashima |
