Remember that Membership Questionnaire...?

In February a membership questionnaire was distributed to all members listed with a unit in the local League roster, some 185 members at the time. Members were asked to complete the questionnaire and return it to the League office. To date, 93 questionnaires have been received - a'50% rate of return. Your Board of Directors was much gratified by the interest shown. A sprinkling of questionnaires were signed, the majority remained anonymous, one arriving in super anonymity in an unaddressed sealed white envelope. Those returning the questionnaire represented a wide diversity of age, length of time in Hawaii, non-League interests and activities, length of time a League member, and amount of League participation

Raw data from the questionnaire has been presented to both outgoing and incoming Honolulu Boards of Directors Members of the Board are having the opportunity to read the wealth of suggestions offered by the members for future direction in League efforts.

Some highlights of findings might be of interest to all members. The desire to aid in an effort to improve community and government was indicated by almost 3/4 of the respond-ants .(64 persons) to be a factor influencing joining the League. The desire to widen intellectual horizons was also a strong motivating factor, according to the 55 persons who checked it as well as the large number of write-in answers on a separate write-in question concerning reasons for joining the League. Favorite activities in 1971 are indicated to be unit meetings (largest number of #1 ratings (29), few #7 ratings), and study of program (U1-26, few #7) with general meetings and the observer program falling at the least liked end of the scale. (General meetings; #1-3, #7-13; observer program: a-2, 7-12), Even the so called "least liked activities," however, had some persons who found them of most interest of all LWV activities. In the ranking of program items in order of interest, Environmental Quality came first (#1-27, /9-2) followed by Schools (V1-17, #9-6) and Human Resources (;`1-12, 9-2). At the same time each program item had a minimum of 4 persons checking it as their first choice. The write-in section requesting the most interesting event or project brought forth a wide range of items running the gamut from coroner/jail to heavily favored activities of the '70 elections in Voters Service and action on ballot issues.

Suggestions for improvement fell randomly in broad areas of Membership, Publicity, Finance, Voters Service, Units, Committee Work, Communications, Consensus, and Action. Board members will be mulling these suggestions over in the coming months. As if addressing all the membership, one member commented, "keep plugging." The clarion call of another was "go get 'ems"

Late membership questionnaires are still most welcome, by the way, and will be gladly compiled and suggestions circulated. Several blank copies are available at the office in case you've misplaced yours.
