LEAGUERS HAVE BEEN ACTIVE WITH-- [Air and Water Pollution Conference]The Air and Water Pollution Conference on November 74-1969, sponsored by the Volunteer Committee for Clean Air and Water. Approximately 50,0 concerned citizens heard scientists, professors and engineers deseribe pollution, how it is measured, its effects. Mr. Carl Klein, the Assistant Secretary of the Interior, as keynote speaker, said federal assistance was possible but the state should handle its pollution problems without waiting for the federal government to do the job. During the afternoon session, local industries and business explained the steps they were taking to alleviate Hawaii's pollution. Time ran out before there was much discussion on what further steps should be taken. Honolulu continues to dump 50 million gallons of untreated sewage every day into the ocean off Sand Island, Hawaiian Electric and the dump continue to smoke 24 hours a day in the Leeward area, and Kona weather makes Honolulu's pall more noticeable. The Environmental Study Committee learned much from the conference. It always welcomes new members and ideas, Will you contribute? Ann Hansen |
