General Membership Meeting - September 13, 1961The subject of the local agenda was presented by Mrs. Annas. She spoke on the planning director, planning commission and the zoning board of Appeals. Representative Eureka Forbes then was introduced. She explained the set up of the planning commission under the board of supervisors, prior to adoption of the charter. The general planning trend in other cities in the US was discussed. She posed questions the league might consider as to whether the city council was actually acting in accordance with the plans of the city charter members. There seemed to be too much "spot zoning" and granting of variances without a real master plan< A good discussion followed. Two members of the Outdoor Circle were present and were interested in the league's activities local agenda. We are proud of the efforts of the Telephone Committee. On Tuesday October 3, 1961, 33 members of the League of Women Voters of Honolulu met at the YWCA for a luncheon in honor of Mrs. Bernice Zurbach, the Mayor and members of the Council. Councilman Doi spoke on recent resolutions implementing the charter and Mrs. Zurbach reported on the influence of the League of Women Voters on certain mainland communities. Councilmen Chikasue, Doi, Heen, Kageyama, Kaito, Lemke, and the Mayor's representative Mr. Paul Keppler attended the luncheon and joined in the open discussion which followed.
