Calendar of Events Membership Meetings Unit Meetings On the Charter Welcome Jail Voters Service President's Phone Come to the Board Meeting Shall We Change Our Dues? (Laura Draper) |
Shall We Change Our Dues?Amendments of two sections of the by-laws of the League of Women Voters of Honolulu will be voted on at the annual meeting in April. They are therefore submitted to the membership at this time, in accordance with Article XII of the by-laws, which provides that proposed amendments be submitted at least one month in advance of the meeting. According to the present by-laws: "Article VI. Dues. Annual dues of $3.00 shall be payable April first. Dues paid by a new member joining after January first shall carry the member for a year from the following April." It is proposed to amend this section by striking our $3.00, and inserting $5.00, and by adding the following sentence: "Any member who fails to pay her dues within 6 months after they become payable shall be dropped from membership rolls." The section will then read: "Dues. Annual dues of $5.00 will be payable April first. Any member who fails to pay her dues within 6 months after they become payable shall be dropped from membership rolls. Dues paid by a member joining after January first shall carry the member for a year from the following April." According to present by-laws: "Article VIII. Section 4. Elections. All elections shall be by ballot. A majority of these present and qualified to vote and voting shall constitute an election". It is proposed to amend this section by adding the words: "provided that when there is but one nominee for each office, the secretary may be instructed to cast the ballot for every nominee. Absentee or proxy voting shall not be permitted." The section will then read: "Elections. All elections shall be by ballot, provided that when there is but one nominee for each office, the secretary may be instructed to cast the ballot for every nominee, A majority of those present and qualified to vote and voting shall constitute an election. Absentee or proxy voting shall not be permitted." ------------------------------ Members, please think this over carefully. Our expenses are greater. We are doing a unique work. No other organization in Honolulu is doing the kind of work for the community that we are doing. Laura Draper |
