Our BillThe Medico-Legal Investigative Department bill, drafted by the Coroner's Office Committee of the League, was introduced into the House (HB 646) and into the Senate (SB 541) on March 14th and March 15th respectively. Both bodies referred it to their Judiciary Committees and hearings have not yet been held. On March 14th, another bill to set up a medical examiner's office was introduced in the House (HB 654); this provided for the office to be under the Board of Supervisors. This bill was referred to the County Committee and a hearing was called on March 28th. Mrs. Smith, Dr. Togasaki and Miss Draper attended the hearing, and spoke in favor of placing the office under a Medico Legal Investigative Commission as in the League's bill. Others speaking on the bill were Dr. Alvin Majpska, Dr. Harry Arnold, Jr., Dr. Raymond Yap, chairman of the County Medical Society's Legislative Committee, Leon Straus, Asst. Chief of Police, Masato Doi, Board of Supervisors. Henry Epstein, U.P.Y., and Lang Akana, First Deputy Coroner. Save for Mr. Akana, the speakers favored the creation of a medical examiner office although most of them disagreed with certain provisions. The chairman requested all who wished, to submit their amendments by two o'clock the next afternoon. Mrs. Smith, Dr. Togasaki and Miss Draper with the aid of two typewriters, scissors, pins and coffee, succeeded in completing a statement of amendments and presenting it at the County Committee office at 1:55 P.M. This is where the matter stands as the Bulletin goes to press.
